“ | This is a special person with diplomatic importance. Anyone who attacks this guy will be in serious trouble with his faction. | ” |
–In-game description |
Diplomatic Status is given to a person with high importance in a faction. Attacking or disturbing such a person can lead to a considerable amount of trouble. In practice, harming them or imprisoning them in any way will severely damage their faction's relationship with your own, but healing them if they're injured is a quick way to get back to being neutral with them. This also applies to other factions and can lead to conflict if both are present in the same place after such an incident.
Characters with crossbows/turrets will ignore commands to shoot at Diplomatic Status targets, unless that target attacked you first either via a dialog effect or having aggressive AI goals. Even when they are the aggressor and the immunity doesn't apply, ranged weapons will refuse to target them until no other targets are available. A way to get around this is to line up your shot to fire at unit behind the Diplomatic status target.
Faction Pacifiers also have Diplomatic Status.
