When used with the "Redirect category shell" (Rcat shell) template:

Template {{Redirect category shell}} may be used to add one or more rcat templates, along with their parameters and categories, to a redirect. For more information, see the documentation page below.

When used by itself:

• From an initialism: This is a redirect from an initialism to a related topic, such as the expansion of the initialism.
  • Use {{R from acronym}} instead for abbreviations that are pronounced as words, such as NATO and RADAR.
  • Use {{R from short name}} instead for the initials of a person's name.
  • Use {{R from abbreviation}} instead for any other length reduction.

Usage

Use this rcat template on mainspace redirects only.

• This redirect category (rcat) template populates Category:Redirects from initialisms. Add this rcat to a redirect (not a talk-page redirect) in the following manner:

Template {{Template:Redirect category shell}} is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:

#REDIRECT [[(target article title)]]

• Use this rcat to tag only mainspace redirects from initialisms to their expanded forms. Please do not use this template to tag an acronym, which is a special type of initialism that is spoken as a word, such as NATO and RADAR. For those use {{R from acronym}} instead. Also, if the redirect is from the initials of a personal name, then use the {{R from short name}} rcat instead.
• If an initialism redirect is not in mainspace, then tag it with {{R from short name}} or {{R from shortcut}} instead.

Parameters

If the target of the redirect does not explicitly show the expansion of the initialism, then use |of= or |for= to show the expansion.

Printworthiness

• In main-article namespace, many initialism redirects to expanded forms are considered unprintworthy; however, there are many others that are printworthy, so there is no default sort for printworthiness.
• In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. Some rcats automatically populate either Category:Printworthy redirects or Category:Unprintworthy redirects by default. Others, like this rcat, do not, and that means it is up to editors to choose which of those categories, Printworthy or Unprintworthy, is appropriate and should be populated. The rcats that are used separately to populate those categories are:

• {{R unprintworthy}}
