Template:R to ligature

When used with the "Redirect category shell" (Rcat shell) template:

This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:

From a title without ligatures: This is a redirect from a page name that replaces ligatures – (Æ or æ; Œ or œ; Ĳ or ĳ, or ß) – with their English language equivalents.
- Apply this redirect (without piping) when the subject page concerns language translation or foreign language equivalents. Other pages that use this redirect should be updated with a direct link to the redirect target (again, without piping).
- This redirect is used for searches and leads to its target in accordance with Wikipedia naming conventions.
- This rcat template must not be used to tag redirects to a title with differences that are 1: diacritics (like ◌̈ and ◌́ – use {{R to diacritic}} instead), or 2: other non-ASCII characters that do not include ligatures (use {{R from ASCII-only}} instead).

When appropriate, protection levels are automatically sensed, described and categorized.

When used by itself:

Usage

This redirect category (rcat) template populates Category:Redirects from titles without ligatures and, when the redirect is in main-article namespace (mainspace), then Category:Unprintworthy redirects is also populated by default. In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. Mainspace redirects that target titles with ligatures – (Æ or æ; Œ or œ; Ĳ or ĳ, or ß) – are not usually suitable for a printed version. In other words they are unprintworthy. See below for what to do for those redirects to ligatures that are printworthy.

Please do not alter the printworthy settings of this rcat without first notifying the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, who are responsible for any and all materials, including redirects, that go into a printed version of Wikipedia.

Add this rcat to a redirect in the following manner:

Template {{Template:Redirect category shell}} is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:

Use this rcat on any redirect to a page title that has one or more ligatures – (Æ or æ; Œ or œ; Ĳ or ĳ, or ß) – from essentially the same page name without any ligatures.
This rcat template must not be used to tag redirects to a title with differences that are 1: diacritics (like ◌̈ and ◌́ – use {{R to diacritic}} instead), or 2: other non-ASCII characters that do not include ligatures (use {{R from ASCII-only}} instead).
These redirects sometimes need to be sorted by surname or when a title begins with "A..." or "The...". Sort such redirects by using the {{DEFAULTSORT}} magic word in the following manner:

Place it on the first new line (do not skip a line) after the Rcat shell. Skipping a line will introduce unnecessary whitespace below the Rcat shell after the edit is saved.

By default, this template tags redirects as unprintworthy. To tag and categorize a redirect as printworthy, use the bar key ( ¦ ) on your keyboard to type the addition ¦printworthy in the following manner:

Note: The bar key ( ¦ ) on the keyboard renders as a pipe ( | ) on the screen.

That will subdue the default unprintworthy category and populate Category:Printworthy redirects instead.
